Hibernation time is on our doorstep so to celebrate we're going to bed early with our favorite books (Yeah!) and sharing some of our favorite sleep tips.
Want to Jump to info about using CBD to support sleep? Scroll to the bottom of the page. We are going to start with some general info about sleep.
According to the Bulletproof blog post:
Why is Sleep Important? Science-Backed Benefits of Getting Your Zzzzs, sleeping better is one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do to improve your life. (Dave Asprey is Bulletproof’s Founder and Author of the book, Superhuman)
The benefits of sleep include:
- Improved brain function
- Faster muscle recovery
- Increased fat burning
- Hormone Balance
- Longevity.
Some of the things that can improve your sleep:
1. ACTIVITY
Moving during the day helps prime your body and mind for deeper, more restful sleep. Activity decreases stress and Cortisol (stress hormone). Stress keeps your body in fight or flight mode which is not conducive to stress. Another Sleep Hack:
Try Amy Cuddy’s 2 minute power pose (see her Ted Talk here) before bed to lower your cortisol levels.
2. ENVIRONMENT
Your sleep space and routine greatly impact your sleep-wake cycle. Keep the room very dark and cool. Try to develop a routing and go to bed around the same time every night and reduce junk light from LED bulbs and electronic devices for as long as possible before bed, preferably 2 hours (Read an actual hard copy book by warm light)
3. MOOD
Reducing stress and nervousness can clear your mind and ease you into restful sleep. Learn to meditate and calm your mind & take these supplements to help with stress and relaxation. Note that many cbd products formulated for sleep include one or more of these supplements:
- L-Tyrosine
- L-Theanine
- Kava
- Magnesium
- Rhodiola
- Ashwagandha
- Holy Basil
- Saffron
- Valerian Root
- Lavender (Terpene Linalool)
- Passionflower
- Glycine
- and of course, our favorite: CBD & CBN
4. NUTRITION
The right nutrients at the right time can maximize the restorative benefits of sleep. Eat healthy fats for dinner (fish, grass fed butter, avocados, etc.) (and Omega 3 Fish Oil Capsules) and stop eating 3-4 hours before bed.

2. Take a hot bath with Epsom salts before bed to help calm your mind and body (try our CBD Bath Salts)
3. Change into pajamas, a nightdress or even a special T-shirt
4. Keep your bedroom dark, quiet and cool

Ready to Geek out on the Science of Sleep? Andrew Huberman is a Neuroscientist at Stanford and several of his podcast episodes (Huberman Labs found at this link) are dedicated to the science of sleep. We have a lot of great sleep products, but one in particular contains many of the supplements that Huberman recommends and can be found at this link: VitaDreamz. Note: Huberman recommends sleep hygiene first and supplements only if good sleep hygiene doesn’t work. See Andrew Huberman’s toolkit for sleep here
CBD and SLEEP
At Botanica cbd, we carry a wide variety of products for sleep which can be found at this link: Botanica-cbd Sleep Products The main active ingredient in these products is cbd (cannabidiol) which is a compound found in cannabis. The government classifies hemp as cannabis products with less than .3% THC ( the component in cannabis that gets you high) by dry weight and classifies marijuana products as products with more than .3% THC by dry weight. Marijuana must be sold in dispensaries. Our products are all derived from hemp and do not require a dispensary license to sell.
Other Ingredients Commonly Found in CBD Sleep Products
Most cbd sleep products also contain other dietary supplements that are beneficial for sleep such as chamomile (full list below).
Why?
Anecdotal evidence suggests that cbd supports health sleep cycles and can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, however, CBD has not been legal long enough to complete three phase placebo controlled clinical trials which take many many years to complete. Without clinical trials to prove claims about sleep benefits, FDA labeling and FTC advertising guidelines do not permit the use of the term “sleep product” on products containing only cbd.
There is not doubt that the addition of some of the supplements listed below and found in cbd sleep products helps their efficacy, but the main reason that manufacturers add these ingredients is that the addition of the ingredients (which have been proven to help sleep in clinical studies) allow them to put the word “Sleep” on the label without violating FDA and FTC truth in labeling and advertising laws.
What are companies allowed to claim with regard to CBD and sleep?
“cbd helps support sound, quality sleep, and regular sleeping cycles”
Some of the “other” ingredients that cbd manufacturers tend to add to sleep products include all of the ones that Dave Asprey mentions above:
- Chamomile
- L-Theanine
- Ashwaganda
- GABA
- 5HTP
- Valerian Root
- Melatonin
- Extra CBN (naturally occurring in full spectrum hemp extract but in lower concentration). THC actually turns into CBN when it ages which explains why smoking old marijuana can induce a "couch lock" effect. CBN is non-psychoactive and sedative.
- Extra CBG (naturally occurring in full spectrum hemp extract but in lower concentration)
- Extra THC (but still less than .3% by weight) (naturally occurring in full spectrum hemp extract but in lower concentration)
When to Take CBD for Sleep
Most manufacturers say to take product 1/2 an hour - 1 hour before bed. Tinctures (or oils that you put under your tongue) act more quickly than gummies or capsules which have to go through your digestive system before taking effect. You can get gummies to work more quickly if you suck on them rather than chew them. When you suck on them some of the cbd his absorbed into your bloodstream through blood vessels in your mouth. Smoke products work more quickly than any of the other delivery methods. If you have trouble falling asleep and want your cbd to take effect quickly, smoking, using a tincture or sucking on a gummy will work fastest, but if you have trouble staying asleep, consider a capsule or chewing and immediately swallowing a gummy. Because it has to go through the digestive system, the onset of effects will be delayed and hopefully will kick in right when your body is getting ready to wake up.
Dosages of CBD for Sleep
This is a tough one and it is different for everyone. Some people’s sleep benefits from just 10 or 15 milligrams of cbd, however, 25-50 milligrams is more typical and some people take 100 milligrams or more, but it is very individual. We recommend starting low and slowly increasing the amount you take until you find the right dose for you. Why? Because CBD is bi-phasic meaning that its effectiveness looks like a bell curve. That means that you need to find the right amount for your body. Taking too much can be just as ineffective as taking too little. For more information about finding the right dose, read our How Much CBD Should I Take? blog post.
Which CBD product is best for sleep?
The question isn’t which product is best, it’s which product is best for you? We are all different with different habits, body chemistry, etc. so the answer to this question varies from person to person. We think (and most literature supports this assertion) that sublingual tinctures work best, however, anecdotal evidence from customers probably points to gummies being the most effective delivery method. I think most people prefer gummies because they are convenient, exactly dosed and more portable than tinctures. I myself take 25 mg of a tincture every morning and that is usually enough. On evenings when I feel restless and can’t sleep I’ll take a 25 or even 50 mg gummy about 1/2 an hour before bed..
Every manufacturer uses a different strain of hemp and some strains work better for some people than others. The difference between different strains includes levels of minor cannabinoids (THC and CBD are main cannabinoids in cannabis but CBG, CBN and others also have some sleep benefits) and levels of different terpenes (terpenes are the compounds in plants that give them a scent.) Some of the terpenes that occur in various strains of hemp that are effective for sleep include:
- Myrcene (Also found in Hops)
- Beta-Caryophyllene (BCP) (Think Black Pepper)
- Linalool.
- Beta Pinene.
- Terpinolene.
Because everyone’s body is different, different products work better for different people. A little trial and error is required but we are happy to help you find the best product for you and can provide a few samples.
